How a thesis is bound.

In response to the frequently asked question: "How is a thesis actually bound?" you’ll find a (not so) little picture story.

Firstly end sheets are put in front of the first page and to the back of the last page. The pages are put in the cutting machine and trimmed at the front. Now the pages are in the Lumbeck press (lumbecken = threadless adhesive binding), you can easily see the curve that will give the book block shape and strength in the future. The pages are fanned out to …… enable the adhesive to be absorbed.A coarsely woven textile strip (gauze strip) is glued to the back to give the book block additional stability. The freshly glued theses are stored to dry and weighted down. The blocks are trimmed again at the top and bottom. Now the finished blocks are waiting to get a cover. To do this, a large cover board (gray cardboard) must first be cut to fit.A thin strip of gray cardboard will be the spine of the book. The cover is made from this roll of fabric.A full cloth cover is created here, i.e. the entire cover is covered with fabric. For a half bound cover, paper is cut because with this type of cover only the spine of the book is covered with fabric. Here the comparison, on the left a full cloth cover, on the right a half bound cover. The fabric for the full cloth cover is daubed with glue, and the individual parts are placed. The edges are turned in ...… and the cloth firmly rubbed onto the lid with a bone folder ...Now for the half bound tape, here too the glue first, then ...... the parts are put together. The cover paper is bedaubed and has to dry for a little while to give the paper time to stretch ...… before it is glued to the book cover. The finished covers are allowed to rest a little …… because the master first prepares the embossings. The letters are set individually in the embossing machine. That’s the embossing machine.<br>The embossing machine heats the letters and these are embossed with foil on the spine of the book …The finished half bound covers…… and the full cloth covers. The book covers are now pulled over the edge of the table to give the back cover the curve that the book blocks already have. Now it's time to bring the book block and book cover together, this is called … places on the cover …… and shut …… and off into the press. And here they are, the finished, bound theses.
